The Lost Boys of Sudan

These young men walked from Sudan to Ethiopia and then to camps in Kenya, where they lived for nine years. Many did not survive the walk, but for those who did, in the late 1990's the U.N. refugee agency and the U.S. State Department recommended resettlement for many in the United States.

The U.S. Catholic Conference has worked with these young boys to help them overcome the trauma of the last 10 plus years, a trauma unknown to most children and complicated by the fact that almost all of the boys are without parents or other family members.

I asked one of the young men,
"Were people nice to you?" He responded, "We were nice to each other."

Peace,
Bill Laufer
